Copy-Cat Queens? Lady GaGa & Beyonce Steal Kylie Minogue’s Image
It seems in the world of music, reproduction is the greatest form of flattery. Pop Queen Kylie Minogue has seemingly been ripped off for years, but is her image all that original? The Melbourne-born Kylie has reached superstardom in Australia, the UK and Europe, but is little more than a curiosity the US. With $70 million in ticket sales from her 2008 X tour without as much as touching down on North American soil and being dubbed as having “moderate success in the U.S. at best, but globally arguably the world’s most popular singer” by the Los Angeles Times, Miss Minogue is certainly not starved for fans. However, Kylie’s super-profitable on-stage image is in danger of being stolen by the U.S. music industry.
People magazine claimed Kylie had taken “fashion cues from American music’s leading ladies” for her first U.S. tour in 2009 during which Minogue sported couture costumes designed by Jean Paul Gaultier. Fashion giant Gaultier designs for Lady GaGa and Beyoncé’s stage shows also and the fashion similarities are unmistakeable. During her North American tour Minogue donned a pant-less, futuristic bodysuit; undeniably reminiscent of the diamond-shaped attachments commonly sprouting out of GaGa’s bodysuits. What we forget is Kylie has been wearing Gaultier on tour since Lady GaGa was an unknown brunette.
GaGa also appears to have borrowed the hooded image that epitomised Kylie during the early 2000’s; notable in Minogue’s ‘Can’t Get you out of My Head’ video.
Kylie’s unforgettable robot-esque costume (Gallery here >) was revealed during her 2002 Fever tour, only to be recycled a whole 5 years later by Beyoncé during the 2007 BET awards in Los Angeles. Complete with automated opening of the metallic cocoon and the electro dance moves which defined Kylie’s original show, Beyoncé earned the disapproval of Kylie fans everywhere. Either way, it’s clear who pulled off the costume; Kylie came up trumps in that department.
Although Kylie’s stage-style is at times reminiscent of Madonna, she’s far less shameless than Beyoncéwhen it comes to blatant image-theft.

Obviously the male population thinks she’s still got it.
